Ladies and Gentleman, the one and only Bob Dyldo!! Starring Chris Piss, this collaboration between director Oliver Heath and artist Ben Frost is an except from their video installation ‘Boob Tube’ that premiered at the Sydney Fringe Festival in 2010. Title design by Esjay.
I’m not sure that Sydney will ever recover from all the artists that we’re in town for the Outpost festival.. I know I still haven’t. Lister’s Solo show opened the night after Outpost at an an abandoned sex shop. I got to chill and have some beers while Frosty got some tatts done by Prizm. Just your average night really…
Sometimes I have the best job in the world. I got the chance to shoot Holiday Sidewinder & Pia May performing a cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘Here You Come Again’ at Sydney’s ‘Route 66′ rocker clothing store. It was part of the Hee Haw sponsored by Sailor Jerry Rum. I also got videos of Seb Nash doing Hank Williams and Trent Marden doing Trent, but it was the girls who gave me the chills. Enjoy.
“Chris Cornell in an intimate setting was a rare treat. It fulfilled the 90s fantasy of my inner 14 year old by seeing one of my idols from youth play in a room the size of your local pub, the kind of rad thing that I imagined was going on but was to young to go to.”
Holla! Here’s a video I directed for Newtown gutter rockers Psychonanny & The Babyshakers. It was entered into the Sydney Fringe Festival Captured competition and came third both in the audience vote and judged categories. A really good result considering the subject matter and grungey aesthetic of this one. Was very nervous about it, figured everyone would get insulted and think I was shit and I wouldn’t get to make videos any more, this was compounded by the fact that the band was on tour and didn’t get to see it finished. Was a difficult shoot, people running late, hungover, drunk, not drunk enough, uncooperative when I was doing a reccy shooting some stills of an empty school to story board a builder came up to me to and had a go like I was a pedo. Was after hours and empty. Must have been my curly pedo moustache. The only time Simon Craw the singer saw the video clip he was worried that it would be considered rascist. FML. Nearly scrapped it in favour of live footage.. glad I didn’t. After a screening a couple of my more critical (read ‘prepared to be arsehole’) friends from the Whipped Cream Chargers told me how funny they thought it was and that they didn’t expect me to do that kind of stuff. Phew.. reaction I was hoping for. Still next time I think I’ll do pure eye candy. As a bonus the Chargers gave me first pick of video to direct off their new stuff. It’s gonna be killer!
When Larry asked me to video him interviewing an Anthrax dude, I was like ‘Fuck yeah, metal!’ In my head they were the inheritors of Iron Maiden’s mantle. Fuck was I off the mark, I made the mistake of listening to their music just before the interview, they’re way more like the brother spawn of that Limp Biscuit shite in proper metal drag. The chicks with dicks of the metal world, ha! Oh well. The interview turned out well, but the shit on the cutting room floor was awkward. Larry kept asking him questions and he was continually like ‘we’re not here to talk about that’, and they talked about babies for half the time. Larry’s hell clucky, I should buy him a kitten before he has a baby. Don’t think the Anthrax dude wanted to be there. Don’t blame him I would have rather have been doing doing something else too, like listening listening to the galloping guitars of Maiden. Brutal.
Decided to start shooting interviews for Larry. Figure it’ll be easier to justify my presence in the room if Tom Waits comes to town. Whiskey!! I was never into Gomez, but I remember that the dudes who liked them in highschool all got laid more than me and the babes dig it. The Gomez dudes were heaps chill to meet and they’ve been regulars in Surryhills for years so while the camera wasn’t rollin we could just talk about the hood. We agreed on the best coffees (although I’ve givien it up) but I don’t think we’d cross over in bars, I reckon they’d be more likely to be at the Clock than the Crix. Wherever they were they’d be surrounded by babes who think they’re really nice, because you know what they are. But seriously never go to the same bar as these guys, it’d be an instant cock block, off the market or not there’s no way you could even compete with the mere presence of these cats. and in the off chance you turned it around she’d be thinking of Gomezes not you & a rad dude like you doesn’t need that. Oh wait, I’m no longer jealous of those highschool dudes!! the babes were thinking of Gomez then too.
Instantly felt an affinity for this album, click through for my full review.
“Johannes proves that being a multi-instrumentalist ain’t just for jazz, and is more than just being able to play bass and lead. It’s an album of songs with slow builds, not couple bar jingles. I’ll definitely be playing it again.”
After spending many nights with Simon Lovelace at the Oxford Art Factory having a bev and admiring others work, I jumped at the chance to film the process when Simon’s turn came.
The talking didn’t make the cut, but was really interested to hear how much of his art skills had roots in his days as a surfboard fabricator. You never know where things will lead you. Thanks to 5th Base for the motion gfx. Big thanks to Mark Gerber and the team at OAF, you run an awesome joint.
Really cool to see some more releases from these guys and a Black Angels Support. Way overdue to get signed. Honestly don’t know what A&R people in Australia do with their time.. The last live video I did for them has had 14k+ views so I got a little carried away on this one. Luke has lasers coming out of his eyes. Fuck yeah!
Finally got a chance to write an article about the early days of the band formally known as The Valentinos.. they had another couple of names briefly before that.. I’ll let you read the article. Interesting how different the early versions of the band were to what you may be familiar with.
I’m really glad to have gotten a chance to do a video with Saint Augustine Academy @ Australian Fashion Week for a third year running. Check out the video lookbook I made! Music by Domeyko/Gonzales
Great band, shitty venue – “Primal Scream played Screamadelica in it’s entirety and it was a rare treat. Transcending the unpleasant venue Selena’s, they joyfully played the ecstasy fuelled music they pioneered...”
Brains and boogie! ”Already familiar with the Oxford Art Factory’s typical debauched state, the idea of a book reading here conjured thoughts of drunken sea shanty prose being read to a dirty guitar backing; flagon in hand DBC Piere reciting verse to the cheers of the crowd as Gareth Liddiard strummed away… This fantasy faded as faced by the polite queue outside and another polite queue for Shiraz at the bar. The Glebebooks signs set me shuddering back to memories of philosophy readings, the endless talk over Gareth Liddiard‘s amazing performance set me to despair. I did what anyone despairing in bar does .. order a drink.”
Having lots of fun. My Ben Frost collab Boob Tube went well at the Sydney Fringe Festival. There was excellent cheese at the opening. Looking forward to developing it further. The excellent cheese appreciation and the film. The Saint Augustine Academy short fashion film I directed premiered to controversy on Pedestrian. Chaingang’s latest music video that I co-directed with theatre savant Stephen Nicolazzo hit the front page of theAUreview and the pedestrian news feed has had over 1,700 views in a couple of days and lots of really positive feedback. Hope that our schedules allow us to work together again. Both the SAA and the Chaingang video was shot by Robert Saponja and edited by Larry Heath. What a great team. Can’t wait for the next project. And to top it all off today I’m the Q & A Featured Film Maker on Genero.tv -a music video comp that I’ve been a finalist in twice. e-mail (info AT instituteofexcellent.com) if you have any inquiries about future projects. Thanks for all the support, Olly.
Nice to write about local underappreciated acts.. “Sometimes you see a band and while you dig it there’s one thing that makes want to check them out again. Over a year ago I saw a band called Grimm Love and the stand out thing for me was guitarist Nat Moss. She has a peculiar way of bending stings that gives me shivers, the song ‘Needles’ that she sung in the set was by far the stand out. I liked it enough to make a live video of it. In fairness I had enjoyed Grimm Love before Nat joined the line up, she just stole the show.”
“Walking through Surry Hills on Saturday I was struck by familiar artwork in the window of Mils Gallery. It was Leah Fraser‘s latest solo show ‘I am the cosmos’, I recognized her work from a previous exhibition which was also my favorite show at Black and Blue gallery.”
